Section 3- Hazards Identification
Under normal conditions of end use, the material does not pose a physical hazard or health risk. When altering the material by cutting, sawing, abrading or other, material may be released that can increase the risk of personal exposure.
Rubber gloves are not normally required but may be worn to prevent possible skin irritation. Skin irritation can be treated by washing the affected area with warm water and soap.
Safety glasses and/ or goggles should be worn to reduce the possibility of eye irritation. Eye irritation can be treated by washing with large amounts of warm water. If irritation persists, contact a qualified medical professional.
A NIOSH or MSA approved respirator may be used to protect against any nuisance dust or dust containing crystalline silica.
Potential Health Effects:
· May cause skin and/or eye and/or respiratory irritation upon prolonged or repeated contact
· Eyes- Temporary irritation such as itching or redness may occur
· Skin- Temporary irritation such as itching and/or redness and/or dry skin may occur
· Ingestion – This product is not intended to be ingested under normal use conditions. If ingested, it may cause temporary irritation to the stomach and intestines
· Respiratory – Inhalation of excessive amounts of dust from the material may cause temporary upper respiratory irritation and/or congestion. Remove affected individuals to fresh air.
· This product may aggravate pre-existing medical conditions of the skin or eyes or upper respiratory and lung disease such as bronchitis, emphysema, asthma, or others.
· The primary routes of exposure are contact with the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.
This product may be regulated and/or have exposure limits or other information that are identified as Nuisance Particles.
This material may contain a very small quantity of crystalline silica (quartz). OSHA classifies perlite as “particulate not otherwise regulated” (PNOR) and concludes perlite is non toxic when airborne total particulate concentrations are maintained at levels of 15 mg/m3 or below and when its quartz content is limited to a level less than 1% crystalline silica.
OSHA has established an 8 hour PEL of 15 mg/m3 TWA for total perlite dust containing less than 1% quartz and has established a 5 mg/m3 TWA PEL for the respirable fraction or perlite dust. OSHA has further concluded that these limits protect workers from significant risk or eye, skin, and other form of physical irritation.
Crystalline silica (quartz) has been classified as a probable human carcinogen (Group 2A) by IARC of the World Health Organization. IARC determined there is sufficient evidence for carcinogenicity of quartz to experimental animals, and that there is limited evidence of carcinogenicity of quartz to humans.
The National Toxicology Program (NTP) has identified respirable quartz as a substance that is anticipated to be human carcinogen. Perlite has not been listed as a carcinogen by NTP or OSHA.

Chronic Toxicity
May cause skin irritation with prolonged or repeated contact. This material may contain trace amounts of crystalline silica, quartz, as a natural contaminate in the raw materials. Crystalline silica is considered a hazard by inhalation. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified crystalline silica as a Group 1 substance, carcinogenic to humans. This classification is based on the findings of laboratory animal studies (inhalation and implantation) and epidemiology studies that were considered sufficient for carcinogenicity. Excessive exposure to respirable crystalline silica can cause silicosis, a non-cancerous lung disease. Crystalline silica has not been classified by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
No chronic health affects are known to be associated with exposure to continuous filament fiber glass. Results from epidemiological studies have not shown any increases in respiratory disease or cancer. IARC has classified continuous filament fiber glass as a Group 3 substance, not classified as to its carcinogenicity to humans. Because to the large diameter of continuous filament fibers, these fibers on not considered respirable.
